What to Do After a Fire or Flood

Now, flood can make your home look really unwelcoming. If you are a victim of a fire or flood, you will never like what you see in your home when the flood or fire is over. Dirt and all sorts would have been driven into the home by the flood and the whole place would be a mess.  Things even get worse if you have not been able to remove your valued properties from the home before the flood came; those valuable properties would have been damaged by the flood and the financial consequence itself can be emotionally wrecking. However, the least you can do after a fire/flood is to get the home cleaned so that life can continue. How exactly can you get this done? Some simple things you can do to remove the traces of fire/flood in your home will be looked into below.

Consider infection

When cleaning up after a flood or fire, you should think beyond the dirt and debris the flood had brought into the home; think of the possible infectious agents the flood would have brought along. It is therefore very important to get the home disinfected when carrying out cleanup after flooding. The disinfection will help to remove any dangerous organism that can lead to one form of infection or the other in the home. How can the disinfection be done? Very simple, just get the surface scrubbed using hot water to which heavy duty cleaner had been added. Use a solution of one-quarter of chlorine bleach in a gallon of water to wipe the whole surface and this will adequately kill all the germs in the home and make the place safe again.

Get rid of the mud

Mud is one of the things that can be brought into the home after a fire and/or flood. The mud must be removed without delay and it must be removed as aseptically as possible; this means it must be removed without such mud leading to one form of infection or the other in the home in the course of mud removal. Shovel will be the perfect tool to get rid of the mud. After this, wash off the left over mud from any of the hard surfaces in the home and the best tool for this is none other than a hose or garden sprayer.

Your insurer must know about it

Before you start with any of the cleaning methods described above, you must first call on your insurer. This is the time to make some claims and you will never have problem making such claims if it had been settled clearly while you were registering the insurance policy. Make sure you take pictures of the home and those of the items the flood or fire had damaged.  Make a list of the damages too and be ready to present them when demanded.  While doing this, you would be equally required to fill forms for insurance claims, income tax deductions and also fill a form for disaster assistance. If you follow the above points to the letter, you will never have problem managing flood disaster in your home.

Ian Somerhalder is known primarily for his steely blue gaze and starring role in The Vampire Diaries, but did you know that the star is also a passionate environmental activist? In 2010, Somerhalder launched the Ian Somerhalder Foundation (ISF), which empowers young people to start environmental projects—which is why we’ve named him one of this year’s Conde Nast Traveler Visionaries. He talks more about his foundation in the video.

Ian Somerhalder has revealed that Damon and Stefan will start working together on The Vampire Diaries.

Speaking to E! Online, Somerhalder explained that the brothers will team up for the sake of Elena (Nina Dobrev) and the rest of the town.

“There’s camaraderie because Damon and Stefan know that in order to protect themselves, Elena and the town from werewolves and Katherine, they have to set these differences aside,” he said.

Somerhalder also suggested that Damon and Stefan (Paul Wesley) do care about each other.

“These two have had every opportunity to kill each other and they can’t do it,” he said. “They love each other.”

The Vampire Diaries continues on Thursdays at 8/7c on The CW.

You might know Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore on CW’s hit, “Vampire Diaries” or as “Lost’s” first significant casualty, Boone Carlyle. However, you may not know that Somerhalder is also a passionate environmentalist. This past summer, the television star has been spreading himself thin, dividing his time between promoting “Vampire Diaries” as well as raising awareness in his home state of Louisiana following BP’s oil spill in the Gulf. After the spill occurred, he ventured down to an area on Grand Isle and was upset by what he found.

“To me and to the people that go down there, (it’s) one of the most beautiful places in the world. And I actually had to watch it destroyed. And it will be destroyed — forever. My great-grandchildren will not be able to enjoy the Gulf Coast of Louisiana the way I have.”

Along with being passionate about the environment, Somerhalder is also an animal rights advocate. Although the CW star is an activist, he doesn’t want that aspect of his personality to overshadow his acting abilities saying, “I think it’s a fine line. I don’t ever want anything to come in the way of me truthfully telling a story.”

The final Edward-v.-Damon showdown trumped ‘em all. The polls were open for 72 hours, and midway through the final day of voting, the virile vampires were separated by less than 200 votes. With six hours remaining, and our finalists still locked in a statistical dead-heat,’s Sexy Beast special-ops team decided to hide the poll results, and began to plan a special issue of Entertainment Weekly commemorating a tournament that had becoming nothing short of an Internet sensation. When the blood, sweat, and broken fangs were wiped away, who was the winner? Let this be the official reveal: Damon Salvatore eked out a mild upset victory over Edward Cullen by a margin of 138,630 to 134,728, a difference of just 3,902 votes.

Maybe it was a last-minute Tweet from Somerhalder himself –”That Pattinson guy will end up kicking my butt, however thanks for taking the time, that’s really cool : )” –that turned the tide in favor of his character. Or maybe it was a get-out-the-vote campaign by Somerhalder’s co-star Matt Davis (Alaric). “I think he text-messaged Justin Bieber and said ‘Hey, would you please vote for my friend?’ I’m not even kidding,” Somerhalder tells EW.

Once Katherine returned to Mystic Falls in The Vampire Diaries’ season finale, it didn’t take her long to do some serious damage. Kissing Damon! Stabbing John!

Producers and cast say her tour of destruction has only just begun.

“I would like to see Elena take on Katherine. Elena’s gone a long way,” Nina Dobrev said at the show’s Comic-Con panel Saturday. Despite Elena’s evolution over the course of Season 1, Dobrev said it’s still nice to step into Katherine’s shoes. “She’s badass. She gets away with a lot.”

More important than a possible battle between Elena and Katherine, however, is the conflict ahead for Damon and Stefan, as Katherine tries to pit the Salvatore brothers against each other. In exclusive footage from the new season, Katherine tells Damon that she never loved him, despite their season-finale lip-lock, and tells Stefan that she came back for him.

“This little switcheroo thing is kind of interesting. Katherine fooled Damon, but it will be really interesting to see Katherine and Stefan come face to face,” creator and executive producer Kevin Williamson said, noting that the confrontation will take place in the first episode.

Katherine’s return may also lead to changes in Damon and Stefan’s distinct personalities. That means seeing more of “nice Damon” and the increasingly dark side of Stefan.

“I think it’s a thing that will never escape him,” Williamson said. “He’s going to have to come to terms with being a vampire and accepting himself for who he is. Part of accepting himself may just be drinking blood.”

But no matter how dark Stefan or other characters may get this season, executive producer Julie Plec promises the change isn’t necessarily permanent.

“We like to think that the darker a character goes, the closer we get to a window to the light,” she said.

Things can’t get much darker for Katherine, who murdered John in the final moments of the season finale. Will there be further bloodshed in Mystic Falls at her hands? Williamson would only say there would be more deaths ahead.

“It has to fit for the story,” Williamson said of the upcoming fatalities. “It has to come from a place of good storytelling.”

Viewers can also expect to learn more about Katherine’s origins via flashbacks.

“There’s another part of the story we haven’t shown you,” Williamson said. “It’s Chapter 2, but it’s also the other side. That’s sort of the mystery: Where has she been? What has she been up to?”

The Vampire Diaries returns on Thursday, Sept. 9.
